Sarfaranga Desert Jeep Rally

A cold desert at 2,300m, jeeps against dunes, framed by the world's highest peaks.

Sarfaranga Cold Desert sits in the Skardu valley in Gilgit-Baltistan — a real dune field at high altitude, ringed by peaks that make it one of the more surreal landscapes on this itinerary.

The August jeep rally draws local and national teams for timed runs across the dunes, with the surrounding peaks of the Karakoram as a backdrop most travelers have only seen in mountaineering documentaries.

The trip pairs rally day with time in Skardu itself and the nearby Shigar valley, since the region has more to offer than the single event — fort ruins, cold-desert lakes, and some of the most dramatic road travel in Pakistan.

What to expect

  • A full rally day at Sarfaranga with guide-selected viewing points
  • A half-day in Shigar Valley, including Shigar Fort
  • Time at Skardu's cold-desert lakes outside the rally schedule

Entry requirements

  • Pakistan e-visa (we provide the checklist)
  • No special permit required for Skardu/Gilgit-Baltistan on this route
  • Reasonable fitness for mountain-road travel; no trekking involved

Safety, specifically for this trip
