Kalash Winter Festival (Chaumos) 2027
Fire, masked dancers, and a week-long purification festival marking the Kalash new year.

Where Chilam Joshi (already on this site) welcomes spring, Chaumos is its midwinter counterpart — a week of ceremonies built around purification, ancestor veneration, and the symbolic "closing" of one year and "opening" of the next, held as snow settles over the valleys.
Expect processions by torchlight, drumming, goat sacrifice as part of traditional ritual, and dancing that continues for several nights — a considerably more intense, colder, and more ritually complex experience than the spring festival.
Because this happens in December, travelers should expect genuine winter conditions in the valley — a different trip in character from a May visit, and one that rewards travelers specifically drawn to the more solemn, ceremonial side of Kalash tradition.
What to expect
- ✦Multi-night attendance at torch-lit processions and ceremonial dancing
- ✦Guesthouse accommodation with wood heating (basic, warm)
- ✦A guide to explain the ritual sequence as it happens
Entry requirements
- ✦Pakistan e-visa (we provide the checklist)
- ✦No special permit required for Chitral valleys on this route
- ✦Cold-weather readiness required — this is a winter mountain-valley trip
Safety, specifically for this trip
- December access to Bumburet/Rumbur can involve snow on the approach roads; Destiny Skies confirms road conditions and adjusts the itinerary date-by-date leading up to departure.
- Cold-weather gear is essential — valley nights are well below freezing during Chaumos.
- As with all Kalash festival visits, guides brief travelers on respectful conduct before arrival — this is a living religious ceremony, not a performance.
